“The most wonderful example of how a person is supposed to think and act”: A Shibolim graduate makes his mark in the IDF

Avichai’s commander: I discovered a soldier with tremendous motivation to serve and contribute, inspired by values from his upbringing and the education he had received since childhood.

Avichai is a graduate of Shibolim, a program that helps young people with disabilities attend mechina. He also is a volunteer soldier serving as an electronics technician in an Israeli Navy optronics lab.

This week, Avichai’s commander published a letter full of praise for him and his meaningful service. We quote from the official Facebook page of the Israeli Navy:

My Avichai, our Avichai.

A volunteer soldier in the service of the IDF.

Serving as an electronics technician in the Navy, in the southern naval theater, in an optronics lab.

A lab responsible for all the theater’s optronics, from primary means of observation that look out over many kilometers, to the accessories used by combat troops: binoculars, night vision goggles, and various gun sights.

When I came and first met him, I discovered a soldier with tremendous motivation to serve and contribute, inspired by values from his upbringing and the education he had received since childhood.

When I understood who was standing in front of me and what potential he had, I told him that in this lab, he would be one among equals, like all the other soldiers.

In that moment, a spark lit up his eyes, and the soldier just blossomed and blossomed.

Avichai is the most wonderful example of how a person is supposed to think and act, in particular as a soldier in the IDF, and in general as a citizen of the State of Israel, with his eagerness to give, work, and contribute of himself for the security of the state. On a personal note, I am proud to be his commander, and his presence is a source of pride for us all.

I expanded his responsibilities, and he passed specialized skills training time and again with flying colors, and quickly became certified in every specialty in the lab, including elevated work.

A faithful, dedicated worker who doesn’t waste a single moment, and works beyond on-duty hours and beyond the bounds of his position.

Alongside his great contribution to work over the course of the day, it has been arranged, according to his wishes and with authorization from all the relevant bodies, for him to be permitted to stay on base during night hours, to sleep in a room with the other soldiers, and to provide assistance to the technician on duty during nights.

Ever day during routine operations, he performs maintenance of all the various systems and solves complex problems, whether on various naval vessels or in high-elevation systems mounted on masts on land along the border with the Gaza Strip.

He leads the other soldiers and drives them onward to the various tasks, guides and explains at length and with unending patience.

Avichai is very sociable and is amply capable of adjusting to new environments. His dedicated work is well known to all, even as he maintains excellent personal relationships with all those around him.

In his work, he is a prime example of how to realize the values of the IDF: adherence to the task at hand and pursuit of victory, responsibility, discipline, professionalism, friendship, and a sense of mission.

Further, when he completed his initial commitment (a year-and-a-half) and expressed an interest in staying on and continuing to serve, we successfully worked to extend his service by a year, and a month ago he received the coveted rank of sergeant and became one of the longest-serving soldiers in the lab.

I wish to express immense thanks to Gvanim, which has provided us with guidance and assistance throughout Avichai’s service.
