Year Two for Shibolim

Disability mainstreaming at the mechinot enters its second year

At Shibolim, the mechina mainstreaming program for people with disabilities, we believe that the mechinot must be open and accessible to everyone.

All young people, whether they have disabilities or don’t, should be able to take part in this important project. In Israel today, we don’t have enough leaders with disabilities who are working to promote the interests of society in general and individuals with disabilities in particular. We fervently believe that if Israeli society is to benefit from such leaders, then this is the opportunity!

The second year of Shibolim has gotten off to a start with 30 participating students mainstreamed at 17 mechinot and five affiliates.

Construction and accessibility work will begin in the next several weeks at BINA and the Mechina at Hannaton. We’re already working on procuring additional accessibility equipment, we’ve started staff training, we’ve had our first accessible field trip, and above all, we’re very excited! We wish all program participants a year of growth and confidence, of challenges, of friendships, and of building an identity of involvement and engagement.

Thanks to program partners JDC–Israel Ashalim, the Ruderman Family Foundation, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Health, the National Insurance Institute Fund for Development of Services for People with Disabilities, and UJA–Federation of New York for helping us cultivate the next generation of Israeli leadership.
