As part of our volunteer activities at the Mechina at Hannaton, we have an activist team that works on promoting handicapped accessibility. We decided to launch a collaboration with Shibolim, a program that helps to mainstream young men and women with disabilities as students at the mechinot (pre-military leadership academies). We organized a Shibolim action group consisting of mechina students from throughout Israel, and after months of work and planning, it became a reality.
Just a few weeks ago, we had a meeting of 12 students who chose to take part in a project to promote the equal right of young people with disabilities to attend mechina. Over the course of the day, group members presented content on the topic of raising awareness of the state of accessibility in Israel and especially at the mechinot. Then we split up into pairs to think of projects to pursue.
At the end of the day, we drew up a plan of action including lesson plans and a platform for connecting mechina students to hikers with disabilities who can use help when in the great outdoors. The group will work to assemble the groundwork for continued action in the coming years.
