After lengthy efforts to compile, redact, and collect sources on community-building in the periphery, KKL and the Joint Council of Mechinot (Pre-Military Leadership Academies) have published the Community-Building Educational Reader. The reader includes historical chapters and chapters containing literary and philosophical content on community organization, the periphery, and community-building as a mission and a means of achieving the ethical calling of mechina graduates. The reader was developed by a special team of mechina alumni and instructors.

The reader was authored for the 30 mechinot participating in On the Horizon, a joint project of the Joint Council and KKL that seeks to assimilate at those mechinot a new curriculum on community-building in the geographic and social periphery. The program will include a weekly lecture for students, guest lectures, and field trips.

The reader was distributed at the first seminar for participating mechinot, and the students just started using it to study the subject of community-building, with hopes that this study will be followed up with action.
