With a stirring ceremony viewed by some 50,000 individuals across social media platforms, the Joint Council of Mechinot marked the anniversary of the Mechinat Bnei Zion disaster in Tzafit Gully, where ten young people perished two years ago.
In their remarks, Miriam Peretz and President Ruvi Rivlin stressed the importance of being able to come together even in the absence of a disaster and of the fate that we all share, while Minister of Education Rabbi Rafi Peretz emphasized the importance of the ongoing process of putting in place regulations for the mechinot. Bereaved parents Itzik Or and Yael Cohen demanded that the process of appointing a committee of inquiry be completed. Jerusalem Mechina head Yael Domb joined them, noting that the in-depth investigation of the organizational culture, objectives, and goals of the mechinot must go on.
Ahead of the ceremony, a number of mechina heads and a few of the bereaved parents came together for a hike in the gully. “Nothing can bring back these young people. Still, today’s event and hike were among the most emotional events in my life, because they showed that it is possible to fix what is broken even from the midst of disaster,” said CEO Dani Zamir at the conclusion of the event. “All of us are astounded and grateful for the nobility of character shown by the parents, who are a fundamental part of righting what is wrong".
