“Dear mechina heads and students,

The assassination of Yitzhak Rabin was one of the most formative and difficult events in our life as a people and a state. It is an inseparable part of the personal memory of anyone who experienced Israel on the night of the murder, but it is also an inseparable part of our national memory.

Rabin’s assassination taught us a lot. It also changed us a lot. As a society, we learned how dangerous incitement and gratuitous hatred are. How quickly an unkind word or a hateful sign can turn into a deed from which there is no return. But we also learned another lesson from Rabin’s murder. How dangerous it is to generalize about entire parts of the population, and how dangerous prejudices that distance the other and shun those who are different from you can be.

The kippah on my head, I started wearing again after the assassination. At the time I was a company commander in Maglan, and I remember the difficulty … toward the Religious Zionist population in the time after the assassination, so I purposely went back to wearing a kippah. That was my personal response, and with it came an important insight: that I had to do everything I could to bring people closer, to remove barriers, to encourage unity. We are one nation. These aren’t slogans. This is a commitment we all share.

For you, the students of the mechinot, the assassination is a historical event that you learn from books, not a personal experience. But you aren’t excused either, from the duty to learn the lessons and for each and every one of you to do whatever he or she can to do away with incitement and bring people closer together. Yes, argue, but with an understanding that we are one family. The dozens of mechinot and their thousands of students are a major opportunity to change our society and lay the foundations for a better, more unifying future. Make the most of this opportunity. Show commitment to the values of giving and counting the other in. It’s in your hands.

May the memory of Yitzhak Rabin be blessed.”
