In order to bring the mechinot (pre-military leadership academies) to the attention of eleventh- and twelfth-grade students, the Joint Council created a department to recruit mechina students and regularize processes for introducing high school students to the mechinot and registering candidates for the traditional and secular mechinot.
This process, whose purpose is to maximize the number of young Israelis who are aware of the mechina opportunity, introduces high school students to all of the secular, traditional, and mixed mechinot.
From September to January, some 130 introductory programs are held at high schools in coordination with the program coordinator.
Students register for mechina online or at school between September and February of the preceding academic year.
Introductory programs are conducted in close coordination with interested host schools and local governments, and include the following:
A lecture by the head of a mechina describing the mechinot and how they developed.
An in-depth panel on the mechinot.
Visits by mechina members to classrooms to listen and respond to students’ questions.
Roundtable discussions by mechina students from which high school students can learn about the mechina experience.
A fair featuring the various mechinot.
Students can apply for mechina at introductory events held at their schools or do so independently online at a website that provides information about all mechina programs.
For advisement, to schedule an introductory program, or for additional details, please contact program coordinator Yaara Schur.
